Honey & Duke

The Dog Who Climbed Trees

Everyone knows that one of Miss Honey Bunny ‘s very favorite things to do is go exploring for new friends.  She loved being part of the kind young woman’s family but knew there was more fun to be had around every undiscovered corner of the world!

Playing in the backyard with her best friend, Duke, is another of Honey Bunny’s favorite activities!  Duke was a brawny, dark blonde Golden Retriever with a beautiful heart full of love for the world.  Honey Bunny and Duke would play for hours and never be tired of each other.  Duke loved his best friend so much, he would share his huge bed with Honey Bunny at night.  He would only use the corner of the bed as a pillow and let Honey have the rest of the bed. They often had sleepovers when the young woman had to leave for a few days.

One day, Honey Bunny and Duke were playing in the backyard, when Honey caught a whiff of nearby new friends.  These friends had sandy brown fur with long, thin legs that made them almost as tall as a human!  They had perky ears, black noses and nervous eyes that constantly darted to and fro.  There were several of these new friends standing in a group, eating grass.  Some of them had antlers that grew straight out of their head!  Honey Bunny had to go introduce herself!

She looked around the yard to see if there was a way she could get to the other side of the fence.  She could almost always find a way to escape if she tried hard enough!  Ah ha! There in the corner of the yard was an apple tree whose branches grew over the top of the fence.  She found her way out!

Honey Bunny looked up into the tree and saw one particular branch that looked like a perfect platform to jump onto.  She tested the tree by putting her front feet up, circled the tree once more, then leapt up onto her chosen branch.  How easy!  She took a few steps along the branch, put her feet on the top of the fence, and leapt over, landing with a soft thud in the grass below.

Honey Bunny sprinted towards the herd of her new tall, furry friends hoping to introduce herself but alas, the deer with their long legs were too quick and perhaps did not speak the language of dog.  As fast as she was, Miss Honey Bunny was not fast enough to keep up with her new friends and was left behind.

Soon Honey Bunny heard the familiar whistle and sound of her name being called so she ran back towards Duke’s yard.  Duke’s owner came running towards her with a worried look on her face.  “Miss Honey Bunny, dogs are NOT supposed to climb trees!” she said as she clipped a leash onto her collar and gently walked her back to the house.

“Your Mom is never going to believe me when I tell her how you escaped my yard!”

Honey greeted Duke and told him all about her adventure but noticed her favorite branch was being cut from the apple tree by Duke’s owner.  Apparently she did not want any more dogs to climb any more trees.  She wondered why dogs weren’t supposed to climb trees as it was great fun and a neat way to meet new friends!

The end…until the next big adventure!
