The Purple Sweater

The Purple Sweater

Miss Honey Bunny was a very trim dog with a broad chest and tiny waist.  She had very little fat and while her short, golden coat of fur covered most of her body, her belly was bare which left her shivery on cold winter days.

Honey Bunny loved to play outside in the snow, but with little insulation she often ended up trembling and had to be brought inside early by the young woman to warm back up.

One winter day, the young woman brought home a purple knitted sweater just Honey’s size.  Honey Bunny did not know what to make of the little knit bundle and did not understand why the young woman was trying to put it over her head.

But alas! The sweater fit perfectly over Honey’s broad chest and hugged her whole body pleasantly, wrapping her in warmth and comfort. She decided she quite liked this gift from the young woman!

The young woman and Miss Honey Bunny in her new purple sweater, went out for a walk.  Honey could not believe how cozy she felt!  She could even play in the snow without her bare belly being frozen by the icy flakes!

Honey Bunny walked the entire time without shivering and when it was time to return home, she didn’t want to take her sweater off!  The young woman lit a fire and let Honey stay in her sweater until it was dry.  But eventually bedtime came and the young woman insisted Honey take a break from the sweater.  Oh darn, she sure loved that wearable hug of warmth!

From then on, anytime Miss Honey Bunny felt chilly, she would find her sweater and try to put her nose through the hole to let the young woman know she wanted to wear it!  Sometimes the young woman would hold it out for her and Honey would run at it in excitement and put her head through, longing for her layer of purple knit to hold the heat in.

Miss Honey Bunny had that purple sweater for all 14 years of her life.  The sweater moved with Honey Bunny and the young woman six different times in those 14 years and remains in the coat closet today with a few well-earned holes in the sides.
